The Winter Solstice occurs at 12:11 p.m. EST on December 21, 2013. At that time the sun appears directly overhead along the Tropic of Capricorn, at 23.5 degrees south latitude.
The word “solstice” means, “sun stands still” and has been celebrated since ancient times. The Romans, for example, honored Saturn, the god of time and harvest, with a week-long feast called Saturnalia.
While the traditions surrounding the winter solstice differ from culture to culture, most recognize it as a symbol of rebirth.
From out of the darkness and cold, the light, and hope returns. Seasons Greetings!
